Hanja lessons: Legend

How do I use the Hanja chart?

Hanja

Meaning

Usage

one, unity,
the same

一等 [일등] the first rank; the first place
一部 [일부] a part, portion; a section
一般 [일반] (in) general, all,

"一"     is the character entry (hanja).

"한" is  the meaning in Korean. 한 means 'one'.

"일" is the sound (pronunciation) in Korean.
NB)    "한  일" together makes the name or label of the character.  When they refer to this character, they say: "한 일 자 "--i.e.,"the character  일  that means 한, where 자 means 'a character'".

"One; unity, the same" is the meaning in English.

"一等" is the example word where the entry character is used.

"[일등] " is the reading of the example word.

"The first rank; the first place" is the meaning of the example in English.

Actual sentences that contain each example word are given underneath the chart, followed by the translation.  Practicing writing Hanja is a good way to memorize them.  Although the Chinese characters always look some kind of puzzling ancient secret codes, you will see some logic in the characters' structure as you learn more.
